Many of my students come from homes where they do not have access to books. Parents either work full time and can't take their child to the library or they have no car to take them. It is up to me to put the appropriate level books in their hands and teach them how to read those books. Our school is home to over 760 students, with heterogeneously grouped classes in kindergarten through grade five. I currently have 18 students who want to learn to read. I have limited books in my classroom leveled library, which causes students find it frustrating to find books they truly love to read. Who wants to read a book that is either too hard or not interesting to you? They come to me daily begging to take books home to "show" mom or dad how they are reading. I would love to send books home with every student every night. Currently I do not have books for my lower students to take home. They are reading from the class reading book or out of date reading books.
