My students range in age from 10-14. They are exploring who they are and who they want to be. My school is a Center of the Arts, but not all are musicians, artists or dancers. Some are programmers, builders, and video gamers. In Robotics, they find their peers. They can share ideas and try different designs. Robotics allows them to use their special talents to design, create, and animate their own visions. Many of my students aren't athletic but they are competitive. Robotics allows them to compete in tournaments with robots they built and rebuilt. They learn how to communicate with mentors and judges. They learn how to work as a team and that all members have something of value to add. They learn that there is always a way to master a challenge but you have to keep working at it. There is something wonderful in watching a group of kids learn to accept everyone as a valuable member of their team.
