We are in a title 1 school, where 80% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Our school has the highest number of students in the district that qualify for counseling services, are in foster care or come from a single family household... with all that said I don't let that define my students. They know when they come to school they are encouraged to succeed, they are supported and they know they will have fun while learning! With the majority of my students coming from unbalanced home lives it has pushed me to transform our class everyday into a place that can take their minds off of everything else. I try to succeed in this by offering them things they might not get at home; I offer choice- they get to have say in what they learn and where, I offer a comfortable environment-they can lay on their bellies to work or sit at a desk, I offer collaboration-we work together and share our supplies. I want my kids to know that they are capable of greatness!
