Our school is one of the largest middle schools in Minnesota, even though it is a part of a small community. Our school offers services to meet the needs of high ability students, students of diverse backgrounds and interests, special education students, and students in-between. I teach the "in-between" students who are very able but are missing some literacy skills. Our class covers English standards and also teaches skills to help students read better so they will be successful in whatever they need to do. My students have diverse needs (just like any other student), which includes needing extra academic attention and support as they navigate early teenage life. Many of my students are from low income families and low stability homes, but no matter what background my students have, they are all hard working once they realize they can learn.
