Students in my rural area come from homes filled with trauma and opioid addiction. Many students live in non-traditional homes including grandparents, aunts and uncles, foster homes, and group homes. These students struggle to be ready to learn academics. Our Sensory Room provides the opportunity for children to relax, calm their fears, and be prepared to go into their classroom and learn! Lying on a rug while watching a bubble lamp, swinging in a swing, or sitting on a wobble stool while playing in kinetic sand has a way of making the children in my school feel better! All children have different needs which is why I choose different items to help meet those needs. We have found if we meet their basic needs first, then they are ready to learn!
