I have a group of 7th and 8th-grade middle school students that have special needs. They are predominantly male, but there are a few female students. Students at this school have a higher risk for exposure to violence and poverty based on the community and environment. These kids are fighters. They have a lot of odds to beat. Sometimes they mess up, but they are only asking for help in the only way they know how. They are funny and clever and they love to be social. The students are exposed to old, used and torn down items and would love upgraded tools. The students in my classroom are in need of additional supports and motivators to meet their essential academic needs and individualized educational plans. The majority of the students in the program have a specific learning disability and need accommodations such as text to speech software, scribe software, and calculators.
