My family consists of just over 200 students in our public inner city middle school. Currently I have 83 6th grade students, of which only 5 students tested to be on grade level in Math and ELA. The average test scores for both Math and ELA are at a 3rd grade level. Like I mentioned before they are very strong and persevere through many obstacles such as language barriers, foster care, poverty, and violence on a daily basis. They survive in the lowest income city of Connecticut that consists of a 90% poverty rate. Of the 83 students 33 are English Language Learners and 21 students receive special education services. School supplies and technology ranges from scarce to none. My students are so amazing and have the true potential and desire to get out of poverty. They never make excuses but truly deserve better in and outside of school. We have established goals and constantly remind ourselves that we will graduate college and no one will stop us!
