“Action on behalf of life transforms. Because the relationship between self and the world is reciprocal, it is not a question of first getting enlightened or saved and then acting. As we work to heal the earth, the earth heals us.” ― Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants Students in this class are already passionate about the environment, but lack an understanding of indigenous ways of knowing science. Reading Braiding Sweetgrass will allow students to reflect on their own relationship with the Earth and how to develop a sustainable relationship as they enter adulthood. The idea of reciprocity with the Earth is a new idea for them. After a year of distance and hybrid learning, students are looking for a balm for their souls and a purpose for the future. This book encourages the reader to work to heal the Earth while allowing the Earth to heal us. Through science and traditional ways of knowing, there is hope for the future and it is important for these students to immerse themselves in that hope.
