My students are second and third graders that are reading far below grade level due to limited schooling in their native country. Children that are illiterate in their native tongue have a more challenging time with second language acquisition. When most third grade students are reading for comprehension and understanding, my students are still building their basic phonics skills. These phonics books and centers will be essential to student growth in phonemic awareness and literacy development. The phonics books are filled with fun stories that focus on specific phonemes with related pictures for building vocabulary. The literacy centers allow students to build words using the knowledge they have gained during phonics instruction. These resources will give my students one of the best gifts you can receive as a child- the ability to read.
