Our world has changed and the idea of a classroom filled with rows of desks has become less ideal for students who are learning in this new era. This is especially true if you work for a Title I school where many students come to school to be loved and seek a safe place that they can go. Since learning is our priority, it is only natural that we create a place that students want to learn in. With this project, I have asked for classroom items that will help students be more comfortable and allow them to choose where they learn. I have asked for writing tables and cushions for the students who like to sit on the floor. I have also asked for a cushion that can fold into a sofa or be laid out for student groups as they work on projects. I have also asked for a rug so that students can sit at the reading center without having to be on the cold floor. My students would love a classroom where seating is optional. Many students complain how uncomfortable desks are (which is true if you sit in them all day) and this shifts their focus from learning to their comfort level. If I can provide comfort for students so that they can focus on learning, then half the battle is already won and the students are free to rise as far as they can go.
