I teach in a rural elementary, located about 40 minutes from the nearest urban area. Our community is highly impacted by poverty. Expanding our global perspectives and keeping our students engaged in current events is therefore an important and sometimes challenging task. Our relative isolation and economic challenges also impact our ability to provide our learners with high-quality field trip experiences. In the fall, our nearest city's non-profit independent cinema screens a documentary series specifically designed to educate and inspire young people. The funds we raise here would cover transportation and ticket fees for 60 sixth graders to see two specially-chosen documentary films over two days. We pre-teach related content and discuss actions to take afterward, thus making the films as impactful as possible. Documentaries can be a uniquely moving medium, particularly for students who have had no prior exposure to them. Please help make this meaningful educational experience a reality for our learners.
