My project is specifically designed to give comfortable seating options to my 6th grade readers & writers. Last year our school launched Reader's/Writer's Workshop as our Language Arts curriculum. It really gives students lots of independent/partner work time as well as one-on-one conference time with me, the teacher! My students were constantly trying to find places in my "made for science" classroom to get comfortable and do their best work -- it was challenging for them with hard, cold tables, chairs, and floor space. I realized that they need different seating choices, like bean bags, bungee chairs, yoga mats, carpet space, and wobble chairs to optimize their working and learning. During our block of time, I want them to focus on their goals and work and not worry about their level of comfort! Another part of the workshop model is a "Come Close" lesson. Students gather closely for instruction that they will use later in the class period. It is recommended that there be a specific place for students to come together --like a carpet. This is another addition I would love to make to my classroom space!
