We have diverse group of students who work hard and achieve at high levels despite the obstacles that face them. 43% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. 17% consider themselves a minority. Students with IEP’s have improved at a significant rate over a five-year period, but a gap still exists. In reading 58% of our IEP students were proficient, in math 77% were proficient, and in science 84% were proficient. Free/reduced students perform well at Whittier, but an achievement gap of 3-5% exists between these students and non-free or reduced students. While our female students perform at a very high level, there is a gap of approximately 2-3% as compared to our male students. Our minority students perform approximately 2% below our Caucasian students, yet they performed 4% higher than Caucasian students in science. Our students are naturally inquisitive and anxious to learn. Their passion about the things they love is contagious.
