I teach Biology at a very ethnically diverse high school where more than 75% of our students receive free/reduced lunch. Many of my students will be the first in their families who will attend college. Most are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. Staying on the cutting edge of science is expensive. With more educational opportunities for students today, they are expected to know more and more when leaving high school. Rigorous courses are a way to make students more competitive. Labs are a necessity in an Biology classroom. Science is overwhelming and daunting for many students. Many of the topics in Biology are microscopic and abstract. The only way to create concrete learning environments for students is to incorporate hands-on laboratory investigations.
