My students love to look at books and have books read to them. They enjoy exploring their imagination through stories. However, my library collection needs some work. The majority of the books we currently use are “hand-me-downs." The students' excitement about the books we have creates wear and tear through the years. We would love to explore new adventures through reading in order to increase our comprehension abilities and explore our imagination. Many of the books that I am requesting will not only help students explore imaginations but will also target social/emotional and functional life skills. I believe this is an important area for students to learn about to become more independent for their future. I also included Velcro and laminating packets in order to create interactive books to add to the classroom library which focus on curriculum-based topics.
Additionally, the majority of my students with special needs enjoy interacting in activities through the use of physical objects. My students with visual and hearing impairments benefit when given tactile cues when participating in tasks. When singing songs, the puppets will be used to encourage these students to increase expressive language through requesting, increase participation by utilizing the puppets, and increasing play-based skills with peers.
The remainder of the items are used to target increasing receptive language abilities with my older students. Utilizing these language games will allow them to target their goals throughout engaging and social activities. Our students will be so excited to have new books, games and items to explore!
