The students of our school come from a diverse background of Asian American, Caucasian, and Hispanic ethnicity in a low income neighborhood in Chicago. They attend the CPS mandated one hour of P.E. class and one hour of health class each week and yearn for more physical activity and information about their bodies and health. The urban setting of the city limits after school sports and activities due to the lack of fields and outdoor space. Additionally, these students are raised in the high stakes testing environment of CPS where their grades and standardized test scores determine their route to high school, college, and beyond. Coming from these specific ethnic groups, our female students are often taught not to speak up for themselves or take on leadership opportunities. The pressure and lack of self-esteem is often detrimental to student success on these tests and grades, ultimately impacting their high school options and future.
