"The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls." ~Pablo Picasso. My students this year are about two-thirds boys, and one-third girls, which creates a very active and precocious classroom. They are bright, but lack much of the home support needed to bring out the best in their academic journey. Many parents struggle to help their children to improve their skills and to stay focused... a constant challenge within the classroom as well. My school is a Title 1 school, with a large percentage of students who qualify for free and reduced lunch. Additionally, we are the host school for a push in program of a local boy's home. Since my grade level is the first year that students are exposed to having to take the state test, the focus is on all things common core. The stringency and intensity of the standards take an enormous toll on the motivation of my kids. The one thing that brings audible hoots of glee... seeing that art is on our schedule for the day.
