As a teacher in an urban Flint, Michigan school, many of my students come from homes where there are little to no books for them to read. For many, outside of the classroom, no reading occurs. Over 75% of my students entered 5th grade below grade level in reading. In addition to this, we are currently being affected by lead-poisoned water. Despite all of these obstacles, my students have grown greatly academically and show a continued desire to become better readers.

About my class
