As Einstein said, "the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." This is my inspiration on my continual quest to make my science classroom as student-centered as possible. Let's be honest... how many classroom lecture lessons stick with you when you look back on your academic career? Was it that cool slide you remember, or was it when you had a chance to work with friends on a fun project? Solving real-world issues requires collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity, and it allows all students a chance to participate in a meaningful way. However, developing effective lessons for every topic takes many years of teaching a particular subject. As the only science teacher at my small high school, I find myself teaching new courses frequently. While attending a conference this Spring, I took a 3-hour training from an amazing educator who has spent 25 years developing student-driven, inquiry-based, real-world lessons in AP Environmental Science. When I discovered that she has a full year of these lessons available, I knew this was the place to start developing my own APES curriculum. This curriculum set will be essential to providing my students with an excellent experience that will not only prepare them for the AP test next spring, but that will also give them the skills needed to be successful in any 21st-century career, as well as a deep understanding and curiosity about the environment around them and the role they play on this planet.
