The students at our school are recent immigrants predominantly from the Caribbean, Africa, Central and South America. They are ESL students who have been in the country for five years or less. Our students join our school community and are guided by our dedicated staff in their journey, adapting to a new country and culture. The staff has worked hard to establish a strong college-going culture. In the Fall, we hear our seniors buzzing in the hallways about the colleges they have applied to. In the Spring, we hear our juniors buzzing about their having registered to take the SAT's, our sophomores and freshmen bragging about their next college trip, and in June we all celebrate as a community the sending off of our seniors to their colleges. My experience as a college counselor at this high school has been the most rewarding and the energy of the student body motivates me to seek out further opportunities for them.
