My students with dyslexia need to be taught in a multi-sensory, specifically targeted, systematic way. The program I use is based in the science of reading; it is structured literacy. I have the children use all five senses to learn the 44 sound combinations that make up the English language. In order to do that, we need different tools to work with, not just paper and pencil. We write our sounds in sand trays, trace on bumpy mats, and jump in place. This method is proven to close the gap in the brain that students with dyslexia have-we build a bridge over the gap. With the pandemic, effective tools that I've used in the past-such as therapy dogs-are unavailable. As such, I am constantly looking for other avenues to help my students succeed. All of my students are extremely bright. Their reading difficulties are unexpected for their intelligence. For them, learning to read is difficult, but the CAN learn. They just need to be taught a different way. These tools will help me teach them in the special way they need.
