One of the major factors for success for fifth grade students is whether or not they spend a lot of time reading. Students that read a lot are extremely likely to greatly improve their reading skills, where students that don't spend much time reading will be hard pressed to improve. That's why it is so important to me that my classroom makes access to books, of all sorts, easy. I've spend my first three years of teaching slowly building a classroom library. Through second hand stores, Scholastic Book Clubs, and Amazon, I've accumulated a decent sized library (one that I've spend an embarrassing amount of my own money on.) However, I've realized that the library reflects some of my own preferences: about 90 percent of the books in our classroom library are fiction books. Many of my students prefer to read non-fiction, and of course much of what we read as adults is non-fiction. This project would help to add a great deal of many high-interest non-fiction books, as well as poetry books and a handful of fiction titles that will be loved by children.
