We are a small, K-8 Charter school. I took over as one of the two middle school science teachers at semester. When I took over, my students had given up on science. Many were disheartened with the class. Getting them to engage any subject took a great bit of effort. Several months in, we have made tremendous progress. For the most part, grades have improved significantly. Student engagement is at a high point. My classroom is commonly one of the classrooms where other teachers are wondering, "what is going on in there?" The students are a spirited bunch with what seems like no end to the amount of energy they bring to school. I make a genuine commitment to creating lessons that help the content come alive. With some subjects, we still require certain materials to help students visualize the content.
