I have 200 students ranging 6th-8th grade, beginning learners to native speakers. We are at in inner-city low income school, better than 90% receive free or reduced lunches. We have a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds represented with many languages other than English being used at home. Each time that I have brought out reading materials, the kids have gotten very excited, yet frustrated because I struggle to have enough materials to challenge them all appropriately, be it not challenging enough or too difficult for the student. I meet with my students for 65 minutes every other day (A/B day schedule). While I have access to articles and short stories from the textbook or other resources designed for their proficiency level, they are not necessarily authentic materials or of interest to the students. Learning how to make meaning, in authentic language situations, has helped my students to acquire the language and really take ownership of what they can do with the language.
