My 11 students are educated in a self-contained classroom where they receive instruction through an adaptive curriculum. They have cognitive and processing deficits that make it almost impossible for them to keep up with the general curriculum. We focus on functional skills such as telling time and calculating money. We also focus on basic academics such as addition, subtraction, and reading comprehension. There are a wide range of abilities in my classroom. I have students who are nonverbal and who are unable to read, add, subtract, or physically. I also have students who read fluently but have severe difficulties with comprehension. Basic skills are often retaught, modeled, and practiced.
