Our school is considered high poverty with 68% of our students receiving free and reduced lunch. Many students come from low income families and are unable to bring in the necessary school supplies, such as crayons, markers and glue, much less the additional items we request, such as individual headphones. At the beginning of the year, many students start the year without many of the skills necessary to be successful in Kindergarten. Many cannot write their name or even recognize their name in writing. Many have never used scissors, much less computers or iPods. We work very hard every day and the children are very excited about learning. We use individual technology on a daily basis. They love their independent time on Chromebooks and iPods. This independent Chromebook time is while reading groups are going on in other parts of the room and it is necessary to have the headphones so as not to disrupt the rest of the classroom.
