Schools are shifting the focus away from content and toward skills, because technology has made content readily accessible. Our students must be able to read critically, write consciously, and speak clearly, and in order to compete in today’s workforce, they must be able to do it using computers. Integrating technology in schools is more important than ever, which is why we need your help. We are raising money to buy eight Chromebooks for my learning center. I have a small room where I bring students for small group work, intensive literacy and math support, and for instruction in writing and social studies. I would use the computers to tailor support to meet the needs of each student We will use the Chromebooks to conduct research, draft essays, and read the news, as well as publish writing, create websites, and make multimedia projects. The students will work collaboratively through Google Classroom, Google Docs, and Google Slides, supporting and critiquing each other. Our computer station will help our students to build foundational grammar, spelling, and math skills, and we will use software, such as Kahoot, to build skills and community at the same time. I will also use the laptops to support my diverse learners, who require speech-to-text technology to compensate for poor motor skills, or need extra time to complete writing assignments, or engage in self-directed learning when the classroom environment is too disruptive. These computers will also help our students prepare for computer-based standardized testing, and will provide them with the foundation necessary to ensure the best possible test conditions.
