I've learned two important things in my 30 years of teaching: kids need to feel loved and they need to MOVE! As adults, we know how WE feel when we sit at a desk for hours on end. Children feel the same way. Students need the freedom to choose how they want to accomplish their tasks in school. One way to foster this independence is to have many options for seating in the classroom. Have you heard the latest saying:"Sitting is the new smoking"? The first time I heard this slogan I actually stopped to think about it. Not only did I think about the consequences to MY health, but to my students as well. This new phrase only confirmed my beliefs that educators need to allow children to move. Health risks aside, flexible seating fosters collaboration and engagement. Being able to "wiggle while they work" ensures that children can satisfy the urge to move around without disrupting anyone else. Some kids need movement to focus. Some kids need movement to keep from being disruptive. While some kids just enjoy moving and wiggling around. It depends on the child. I strive to create a stress-free environment in my classroom. To date I have bean bag chairs and two core wobble stools. I would like to add 11 more wobble stools to my classroom to allow for movement as a seating option.
