Students will be using flexible seating to address a wide range of sensory needs and incentive for learning. Each of these students have various needs and disabilities that require a more creative approach to using classroom space during instruction. The students find great difficulty remaining seated throughout the school day. They enjoy learning but have a short span of attention. The typical use of a move "n" sit is not doing the job! They enjoy sprawling out on the carpet, sitting on their knees or straddling chairs to help them find comfort while attempting to learn. We continuously change the learning environment to pique their interests and engagement in learning. The exciting part of flexible seating is the "flexibility" to change with their needs. Flexible seating will provide "ownership and responsibility" in their own learning! Students will need to care for the materials in order to be able to utilize the seating choices in the classroom. They will have the ability to ask themselves "what works best for me?" These items will allow for each child to experience tools that can make learning successful for them. This week the exercise ball may work well for a particular child, but next week it isn't doing the trick. Let's change it up...lets try using a bolstered pillow cushion at a lowered table or sitting on the carpet with a lap tray and/or using a rocker for the student who needs constant motion! Stools are another option for those students who do not like having a back on a chair. The fitness bands are for the bottom of students chairs who need to keep their feet on the go! Giving them access to these materials provide them with a voice and the ability to experience optimal learning!
