My students come to the classroom with histories of low self-esteem and often lack the support systems they need to thrive in an education setting. Being in a sub-separate Social and Academic Remediation Special Education class, we challenge and support our students to become critical thinkers. In math, I push the conceptual understanding of topics as well as procedural fluency, both of which need to be emphasized and practiced. Although there is still much work to be done, my students have surpassed expectations and continue to impress us teachers every day with their grit, humor, and passion.
