Many of my students come from very impoverished areas in Latin America. Many families have immigrated to the USA to escaped drug cartels and gang violence in their country. Some of my students have only attended school through the second grade. Many see the United States as a land of opportunity. Since I speak Spanish, the English Learner population is placed in my class but I also have students whose first language is English. Most of my students lack necessary skills to be successful academically and although technology can not be the only approach to helping them meet the academic standards, it is an essential one. Washington Prep High School (WHPS) is located in South Central Los Angeles in the Athens area. It is notorious for gangs, homelessness and crime. There are 1,175 students enrolled at WPHS, approximately 350 are English Learners. 48.8% are African-American and 48.3% are Latinos. 85% of WPHS students are socioeconomically disadvantaged.
