I teach K-5 music in a public school of 693 children. Our school has a very diverse population of children including Asian, African American, Hispanic, and Latino. To raise achievement scores, we have an arts integrated curriculum. We also have many resource children. I have found that taking a book and putting music to it is a great way for children to learn to read, understand vocabulary, and spell. With a book, children can use rhythm instruments to tap out the syllables of a word or a phrase in the book. The children explore using their own musical ideas, matching them to the literature. and then creating a literacy musical soundscape. I have asked for the Caldecott Books I and II as well as two rhyming books for younger children called "The Napping House" and "The Rainbow Fish". These books are quality books and would serve all grade levels in their learning to compose soundscapes.
