My students' are anywhere from 1-8 reading levels behind their grade level. Reading is the key to raising my students' reading levels. However, getting my students to read is often a loosing battle. This project will utilize books and cameras to help students connect to the book they choose, which will boost students' desires to complete the book and in turn raise students' literacy levels. First, students will select a book (at their reading level) from the list that they feel compares to their life story. While reading the book, they will note how their life compares and contrasts to the story they are reading. Next they will document the important moments in their life that they share with the book with a disposable camera. These steps will culminate into a poster presentation that shares the similarities between the book and the students' life. Math will be incorporated, too, as students will build a mini-model of a building they believe would similarly benefit their community, and the community in their book. Through this project, students will learn how literature is a representation of peoples' everyday struggles. They will see that they are not alone in the challenges they endure, and learn how others have approached and conquered similar struggles. In presenting their story, too, they will see the importance of sharing your story with others, and that in turn will add value to their everyday life.
