My music program includes many opportunities for my students to explore their musical passions. We have several before and after school music clubs that include about one-third of my schools population. We are blessed to have instruments and opportunities, but the problem is, we have no place to sit!
My classroom instruments are waist level so the students stand when they play, but this gets very tiring. For drumming we go around the building borrowing classroom chairs to use so that we can play at a comfortable height. Unfortunately, this takes away valuable rehearsal time. Also, classroom chairs are too bulky for using in a performance setting, so students are forced to kneel behind their drums in performances and this quickly becomes very painful. We also borrow chairs for drama club and recorders as well. Sitting on the floor or kneeling are viable options, but neither option is comfortable or good for proper playing and/or singing technique.
These stools will be invaluable to my students. They are light weight and stack, so they can be transported from the classroom to the stage and cafeteria with ease. They can be moved aside outside of rehearsals so that my classroom floor space will not be sacrificed. During class, 23 of the stools will permanently find residence behind my classroom set of Orff xylophones. This means that all 700 of my students will directly benefit from this project when we play the xylophones in class. I also plan to use the stools to prop up smaller instruments in front of my special needs students that are in wheel chairs. Finally, the stools will also travel well. My choir and drumming clubs will be able to take them on the buses to festivals and use them in our community performances.
