My students are 8th graders that reside in a high-poverty district. They are struggling readers who need and want to be challenged. My students enjoy reading challenging texts and applying the book content to their lives. My students come to class ready to learn every day. Through this novel, they will be able to reach their academic potential. They need the opportunity to be challenged and understand topics that related both to themselves and their culture. Through this unit my students will sharpen their reading and writing skills and be better prepared for high school and college. Many of students do not read outside the classroom but with this historical novel, I know that I will have their upmost attention and desire to read.
