My school environment is big on team work and student achievement. Many of the students that I service in speech come from a compromised neighborhood and lack access to motivational and supportive academic materials. The students are bombarded by common core aligned academic material in school, but lack the pre skills to actively access this academic material. So they sit in silence, and become passive participants in school. These students want to actively participate, but don't have the means too. Often times, during speech sessions, they respond, "I don't know;" when asked a question about material we are working on. Students present with difficulty in spelling words and majority of the time say; "how do you spell...?" The students yearn to read and write independently, but don't have the means to; thus becoming unmotivated.
