My students are in a Title 1 school with a diverse ethnic background. Some of them are barely above the poverty line and the majority are below the poverty line. They have very limited resources at home. We have a high free and reduced lunch rate as well. My classroom has a few literature sets, but often the students have to share with each other, and the books are tattered and have missing pages. I would like them to be able to have their own book to read and justify their answers when asked text dependent questions. I am trying to instill a love of reading a good book. Literature encourages their imagination, dreaming and making different characters, and places come alive.
