My students attend a Title 1 school that serves a majority of the city that is in poverty. All of my students receive free lunch. They come to school to activate their learning and as an escape from the violence that they are surrounded by in their community. Many of my students live in neighborhoods that have frequent gang and drug activities, but in our classroom we have an escape where they learn about the world outside of where they are from. Many of my students have never left the city, so when we discuss the world in literature and text, and see images, it is sometimes the only exposure that they may have. My students' families are hard working and want the best for their child and we collaborate together to figure out how we will break the cycle of poverty and close the achievement gap that is prevalent within our area.
