Modern board games have come a long way from traditional board gaming and now encourage students to collaborate and use critical thinking skills to compete in the game rather than work independently using basic skills to win. Games like Monopoly, Sorry, and Life are making way for modern board games that expand on critical thinking through creative genres. Games such as Forbidden Island, a cooperative game, has players discussing the best ways to collect needed treasures and get off a sinking island safely. Players offer suggestions, discuss options, and make decisions together. Another game, Dixit, encourages players to make inferences and draw conclusions based on abstract pictures to match to a person, place, and thing. These games are excellent tools for transferring skills to small group work in the classroom and to be competitive in the 21st century workplace. The goal of this project is to introduce students in grades K-8 to modern board gaming, which will deepen the development of critical thinking skills, developing and testing strategies, problem solving abilities, social skills, communication skills, ability to negotiate, and collaboration skills. Improvement in these skills will transfer into he classroom, especially as we discuss the importance of taking responsibility for actions and decision making. They also allow students to serve as Peer Mentors for other students when situations arise, they will be able to help students develop and share strategies that will allow them to be successful in academic and social situations. This is the second year of this program and our group size has more than doubled, with new students joining every day. Students enjoy coming to group and have said that it makes coming to school easier. Students pegged as "disrespectful" or "doesn't take things seriously" have improved in the classroom and are now leaders among their peers.
