Learning how to read is a huge part of Kindergarten. This is an exciting as well as challenging step in my students' lives. In order to accomplish this big goal- I must foster the love of literature in each child. One way I have done this is by holding author studies in my class. During an author study we read many books by the same writer and/or illustrator. This helps students pick out trends in the author's writing style and sometimes get to know familiar characters. Mo Willems is one of our class' favorite authors every year. He uses sight words and simple sentence patterns that children can read easily and fluently. He uses humor to engage his readers and teach them a few life lessons along the way. Piggy and Elephant are two characters that everyone falls in love with. Having the entire series available for my students will bring them so much joy and will definitely motivate them to want to keep reading!
