My students need over 50 of a variety of books to engage with as readers, to escape reality, and/or to see themselves in the text. This includes Hate List, Go Ask Alice and The Car. With my 9th and 10th grade classes, I have worked to create a culture of readers. The classes compete in our Reading Challenge, which has increased their reading but also depleted my library. In addition, our school library is very limited, so I have worked to build a classroom library. The first semester of this year my classes read a total of 664 books between 101 students! This request would help provide over 50 books to my readers, who are quickly running out of material. "I like most of the books Ms. Otto gets but right now I don’t know which book to read- I think I’ve read most of the good books she has.” I think this captures my request perfectly- I need more books so the students can continue to grow as readers and people. We all know the benefits of reading- reduces stress, improves sleep, memory, concentration, vocabulary, and the list goes on. Not all my students will go to college, but reading is a necessary life skill. With these donations we can help them develop the skills for whatever career path they choose. The Reading Challenge works like this: • First ten minutes for independent reading • Students are provided with a Reading Challenge list • When they read a book, they check off a challenge • Classes compete against each other- I average the number of books read with the class size to make it fair for the smaller classes. One class has five wins! • Each class has an individual winner • The challenge ends at semester- the class who wins gets a pizza party and individual winners get a gift bag with books and other goodies • They are required to read one book a quarter, for a total of four throughout the year.
