My students are largely Hispanic and poor. Most of them are unable to afford private music lessons. The students I serve in mariachi are in grades three through five. For many of them, my group provides their first introduction to the music of their own culture. They must be earning passing grades and have their classroom teacher's permission to participate in my performance group. Participation in the mariachi is high. My school has about 200 students in grades three through five. Eighty students signed up for mariachi in the fall this year. The students in my program have great attendance, grades, and work habits; they are well represented in the GT group. My children work very hard to learn to sing, to play vihuelas, violins, guitars and guitarrons, and to conduct themselves with confidence during live performance. They learn to work hard in a rehearsal situation and to overcome their own fears. These experiences serve them well in the community and in their personal lives.
