My students are 3 through 5 year old public school preschoolers with speech and language delays from a high poverty environment. The students I work with display difficulty in the areas of receptive and expressive language. They struggle with identifying and labeling common objects and actions, following directions, participating in turn-taking, asking and answering questions, combining words to create phrases/sentences, using pronouns, socializing with their peers, and a number of other critical skills for effective communication. Additionally, they have difficulty participating in pretend play and have not developed the language they need to role play and communicate during these activities. It is so important to assist these children in developing their language skills through play. Unfortunately, the materials available to work with these young students is limited, and they would truly benefit from these functional toys to help them expand their language skills and reach their goals.
