"Head Start is a federally-funded educational program for eligible 3- and 4-year-old children. In addition to math, reading, science, and art skills, students are taught about cooperation, problem solving, and responsibility." By the end of our program, our goal is that students are kindergarten ready. Our students are 3 and 4 years old and are in the first year of our program. This is the first time many students are introduced to the concept of letters and letter sounds. Our students love to be read to individually and in small groups and this is something they will choose to do during their choice time. We work on pre-reading skills to build the foundation they will later need to read. "Reading aloud with children is known to be the single most important activity for building the knowledge and skills they will eventually require for learning to read." Marilyn Jager Adams.
