Last year, for the first time, I offered my students various choices of seating. Each day, students were able to select an area where they felt they could do their best work. I wasn't honestly sure how well this arrangement would work out with 32 fourth graders (9-year-olds)! To my surprise, students Flourished. Who says you have to sit in a hard desk chair, tucked under a confined little desk area to learn?! Students enjoyed sitting at rolling chairs, movable tables, standing areas, benches, a futon, and with lap desks throughout the course of the year. I added these options entirely with my own funds because I have a passion for changing the traditional setting of a classroom to a more friendly environment. Now that I see how beneficial these changes were, I would love to offer even more options to students! The stability balls will cater to students who have a difficult time sitting still. The armchair pillows will be at a station on the floor, with a lowered table. The other options of stools & cushions will be a wonderful addition to our moving table seating options. This year I have created a giant bulletin board with the fun flexible seating options. Students will move their tags to their daily choice. I would love to have more options than the ones we have now, especially given the class size of 32. This donation would transform the mundane daily classroom into a kid-friendly one where students will be excited to come to school each day to learn!
