Currently, we are working on an independent reading project where students are given choice and flexibility to read what they like. They recently got into manga as a suggestion from a student in our class, and now the entire 8th grade is totally obsessed with manga. We have one manga, and there is a line of kids waiting to check it out. Kids who were reluctant readers are now voracious readers. It's pretty amazing to see! These manga books will be used by students in my classroom, to broaden their reading opportunities by having materials readily accessible to them. We have lots of time to read and discuss our books in my class. Every day I am asked to buy mangas or graphic novels. My heart breaks to deny children a book that they are excited to read.
