I love sharing my artistic hobbies/interests with my students. Recently, I have begun exploring the world of 3D printing. Through various grants, I have collected a variety of printers. A new piece of technology has caught my attention and would add a new creative layer to our projects. The IPad Pro features a LiDAR camera. The camera will be used by my students to scan 3D objects in the real world and place them in a digital world, allowing my students to modify and transform objects in digital 3D space. The project will have students build an assemblage sculpture using recycled materials. Their goal is to create a Sci-Fi inspired spaceship. Once the ship is constructed, the students will used the LiDAR camera to scan the object. Using 3D software, the students will design pieces to add to their creations. The pieces will then be printed on my available 3D printers and will be attached to their sculpture, which will then been painted and crafted to look like a movie prop. The person who inspired this project is Adam Savage, Mythbuster and model maker. His excitement for the creative process and all things "nerdy" is on display in my classroom on a regular basis. Specifically, his Youtube videos on "kitbashing" and model making will serve as inspiration for our sculpture project.
