My 5th grade students are inner city kids who struggle with all that comes from living in poverty. Most are behind in reading and math, but they are meeting their goals and progressing, despite the road blocks in their way like hunger and less-than-clean clothing. Our school has taken on the Leader in Me initiative, creating leaders of our kids. My students are living up to this challenge and are showing the younger kids what it looks like to be a leader instead of a follower. They are learning to be proactive and to put first things first, preparing them for life after elementary school. They have such a variety of talents, from singing to writing, to drawing and jumping rope. I'm proud of the progress they have made this year. I would like to provide a more calming, pleasant atmosphere so they can continue to thrive. With the help of generous donors such as yourself, I am confident of the positive impact this project will have on our classroom.
