There is a common misconception that picture books can only be enjoyed by the youngest learners...but I am here to tell you that is absolutely not true. I have taught upper-elementary for the past few years and they have all enjoyed a good picture book read aloud. A good picture book can teach students many academic skills and life lessons! Since most of my students are English Language Learners, having a good picture read aloud to them is extremely important (especially since many don't get to have books read to them at home). Picture books expose them to new complex vocabulary, gives them opportunities to listen to correct phrasing and expression, teaches them important life lessons, helps them learn about story elements, AND gets them to enjoy books! (just to name a few) Whether I will be reading these books in my classroom to my students or through a computer during virtual learning....the learning possibilities are endless. Here are some specific ways I plan on using the things purchased through this project: I plan on buying a variety of picture books and genres, focusing on having a diverse book collection that can teach my students not only about story elements or a variety of reading strategies, but also about important life lessons, other cultures, religions, and race. The chart paper and Sharpie markers will help me create visually appealing anchor charts. The Astrobright paper will be used for various graphic organizers or pages to go along with reading strategies, story elements, etc... And finally, the Teachers Pay Teachers (TPT) gift card will help me purchase resources to go along with my books focusing on ELA and writing.
