Flexible seating allows for students to make choices that better suite them in their learning. For some, flexible seating helps them engage and focus better on the lesson. Other students just like the choice of being able to choose where to sit. I have noticed that if I give students the option to change their seat during independent practice, they are more engaged, more focused, and are happy that they are able to have a choice in choosing where to complete their work. My students are happier and more engaged when they have the choice to choose where they sit to complete their independent work. Students will have the opportunity to move closer to the board during instruction while having the opportunity to have a hard surface (lap desks) to write on and will be able to sit up. Students will also be able to choose during independent practice to move to other areas in the classroom with these items. Making sure that students are comfortable is an essential component in their learning.
